Manaslu Region

Larke top - Manaslu Region trek

Manaslu is in the Gorkha District in central Nepal, east of the Annapurnas. The mountain and its satellites stand south of the border and the Budhi Gandaki that drains the region. Between border and river, are two Buddhist communities, speaking different dialects. To the east is the secluded Tsum Valley, home to a third community for ~800 years. These groups have had minimal contact with Nepal and still trade with Tibet.

Water from Tsum joins the Budhi Gandaki at a confluence where the trails diverge. The concentrated flow has cut deeply into its channel forcing trails to undulate between ridges and tributary-crossings more than in other regions: making this a more demanding trek. Pre-fitness and stamina is required to explore this magnificent region.

Restricted trekking was opened for Manaslu in 1992 and for Tsum in 2008. Nepal’s five restricted regions may only be explored in the company of an official trekking guide, with a minimum of two persons per party and a Restricted Region Permit. Highest altitudes are shown below.

Full board and Teahouse lodging plus safe drinking water is inclusive on all our treks. Porters will carry your main luggage, £ 15kg; you should carry a pack with 4-5kg of warm clothing, camera and water.

Each trek begins from Soti Khola in the narrow Budhi Gandaki Valley after a 130km jeep drive northwest of Kathmandu: much of it on difficult secondary roads. The first four days negotiate switchback paths, exposed cliff-face trails or follow the gravel banks through glorious wooded scenery with countless waterfalls. Village communities are welcoming; and change from Hindu to Buddhist from Sirdibas on the fourth day.
